To prevent a danger to the public, New York City has initiated a new rule to require inspections of parapets and appurtenances within the city.

Beginning on January 1st, 2024, building owners must have an annual observation and report of the parapets and appurtenances on all buildings within New York City as per Section 28-301.1.1 of the NYC Administrative Code and in addition the NYCCS™ recommends taking advantage of the Clean & Safe Chimney Program having the chimney cleaned and inspected BOOK NOW!  

NYCCS™ founder Marcel Newberg says, "Their are portions of the exterior walls of a building that can deteriorate over time and at a faster rate due to cavities that run vertically through out the exterior walls  of the building within these walls are known  "chimney's" that cumbustion chemicals, changing temperature, change of fuels, condensation all weaken the masonry exterior wall structure creating a public hazard.

"NYC DOB CODE Article 302: Maintenance of Exterior Walls

§ 28-302.1 General. 

A building's exterior walls and appurtenances thereof shall be maintained in a safe condition. All buildings greater than six stories shall comply with the maintenance requirement of this article END OF NYC DOB CODE"

What is appurtenant in construction? The word 'appurtenance' means a  subordinate "chimney" part or adjunct to something else "exterior, interior walls, floors, and parapet", but something that might be considered as an in integral or necessary part of the whole "structural system"

Appurtenant structure "Appurtenant structure" includes but is not necessarily limited to a cornice, parapet architectural terra cotta, projecting and freestanding ornamentation, exterior fire escape, balcony, marquee, light fixture chimney, or sign and its support structure.
