Metal Chimney Liners?
The widespread assumption that every older masonry chimney requires a stainless steel liner is often overstated. In many cases, existing fireclay liners remain safe, functional, and fully compliant when they are properly maintained and in good condition.
A stainless steel liner may be necessary when the existing liner is damaged, improperly sized, unlined, or when a new appliance requires a different venting system. However, relining should be based on documented deficiencies, not age alone.
Before investing in a chimney liner, property owners should request a thorough inspection, including video documentation and clear evidence supporting the recommendation. An intact, properly sized fireclay liner can continue to provide safe and effective service for many years.
Professional chimney evaluations should be based on condition, performance, and applicable codes—not assumptions or sales objectives.
EXISTING MASONRY CHIMNEY'S NYC BUILDING CODE EXCEPTION
NYC CHIMNEY LINER CODE:
NYC FGC 503.5.6.1 Chimney Lining
Chimneys shall be lined in accordance with NFPA 211.
Exception: Where an existing chimney complies with Sections 503.5.6 (INSPECTION CODE) through 503.5.6.5 (SMOKE TEST CODE) and its sizing is in accordance with Section 503.5.5 (SIZING CODE), its continued use shall be allowed where the appliance vented by such chimney is replaced by an appliance of similar type, input rating and efficiency.

NFPA LINING CODE:
NFPA 211.14.9
If the flue liner in a chimney has softened, cracked or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion (I.E. heat, moisture, creosote & flue gases), the liner shall be removed & replaced, repaired, or relined with a listed liner system.
